Preston Point Wharf Upgrade

The Department of Defence required an upgrade to their ageing facilities at Preston Point, where the wharf is located near a residential area in East Fremantle on the Swan River. Ertech Pty Ltd was awarded the contract to complete the upgrade works in January 2015 and J Steel was subsequently awarded the contract to supply the piles in February 2015.

Key Requirements and Scope:

J Steel was engaged to manufacture and supply approximately 600 MT coated tubular steel piles with LTL clutches for the wharf wall and fender piles.

Solutions and Benefits:

  • Manufacture 610mm OD steel tubular piles, up to 20m long using High-frequency electric resistance welding (HF ERW) in single length (unspliced). 
  • A comprehensive ISO 9001:2008 certified quality management system to ensure clients’ quality expectations were met. 
  • Implementation of full time qualified inspection team (independent of the manufacturer) at the manufacturing facility to ensure that approved ITP’s and other procedures are strictly adhered to, providing end to end traceability and eliminating the risk of defects or non-conformances.
  • Handover of comprehensive Manufacturers Data Record (MDR) incorporating detailed inspection and testing records to evidence conformance to the required standards.
  • Use of polypropylene ropes and rubber matting to protect the coated piles during transportation to ensure the clutches were straight and coating remained undamaged.
